Harriet Tubman was born Harriet Ross. She is most well known as an abolitionist, humanitarian, union spy, and the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad. During a ten-year span, it is estimated that she escorted over 300 slaves to the free states of the North. After her death in 1913, Tubman was buried in Fort Hill, Auburn with full military honors. In 1995, the federal government honored Tubman with a commemorative stamp bearing her name.
