Clyde Mayes
Submitted on: February 07, 2023Clyde Mayes was born in Greenville, SC on March 17, 1953. As a young athlete, he joined the basketball team at Wade Hampton High School. In 1971, Mayes enrolled at Furman University where he continued to play basketball.
Mayes averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds per game as a Paladin. He was named South Carolina Player of the year in 1975. As a senior, Mays earned first-team honors from Basketball Weekly and Citizens Foundation. He earned second-team honors from Sporting News and Converse and third-team honors from the Associated Press.
After Mayes's college career ended, he was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team in the second round of the 1975 draft. After two seasons in the NBA, his international career would take him to Italy, France, and Spain
