Sammy Davis Jr.

Sammy Davis Jr. was born on December 8, 1925. Davis began his career as an American entertainer at the age of three. He toured with his father and uncle, Will Mastin. They were known as the Will Mastin Trio. At the age of 7, Davis played the title role in the film Rufus Jones for President. He would later go on to serve in The United States Army during World War 1. During his years of service, Davis was assigned to an integrated entertainment Special Service unit. After his discharge, he rejoined the family dance act. In 1954 Davis lost his left eye due to a terrible car accident. Davis became a member of the famous Rat Pack in 1959. The Rat Pack included other entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Joey Bishop. Aside from his dance career, Davis starred in many films including Oceans 11, Robin and the Seven Hoods, and Mr. Wonderful. Davis was a victim of racism throughout his life and was a large supporter of The Civil Rights Movement. Sammy Davis Jr. died on May 16, 1990, due to complications from throat cancer. In 2002, He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
